HISTORY

In 2023, a support group for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) LGBTQ+ women was established under the leadership of Mable Naluwooza and Bridget Nakayenga. Ms Naluwooza had previously waited for a response from the Home Office regarding her case, which rendered her unable to work or pursue employment opportunities. This pervasive hopelessness compelled her to launch a podcast to raise awareness and engage with various women to discuss their needs and potential avenues for mutual support. Drawing inspiration from her personal experiences and the narratives shared by her podcast guests, Ms Naluwooza recognised the limited availability of support services for BAME LGBTQ+ migrant women hailing from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds. Consequently, the Namow Initiative was established to give these women the opportunities they deserve.

The Namow, which stands for “lifting each other,” was founded to advocate for the rights of BAME LGBTQ+ women who have faced gender-based violence, domestic servitude, unemployment, immigration, illiteracy, and other issues BAME LGBTQ+ women often encounter. Although we are based in London, our organisation has a UK-wide perspective. We are a group of BAME LGBTQ+ women and anti-racist activists who envision a world where all BAME LGBTQ+ women are secure and can lead lives free from patriarchal and state injustices.
